Domestic violence in South Province of New Caledonia

As part of the Pacific Dataviz Challenge 2024,
the South Province of New Caledonia is making available the anonymized data of people received by the Domestic Violence Treatment Service between 2008 and 2023.

This dataset represents the anonymized data of people received by the South Province domestic violence treatment service “Le Relais” between 2008 and 2023.

It includes data on the person's status (victim, perpetrator, mixed, child), age, family situation, commune of residence, socio-professional category, number of children, types of violence encountered and referrers.

These data can be grouped by date of contact with the Relais (see the field " &contact date").

It is important to note that the information presented in this dataset is based on eclarative data et that some data may be missing.

In compliance with the GDPR, sensitive data and personal data have been blacked out.

All forms of violence are punishable by law : To illustrate and become aware of the different types of violence that exist, you will find below some examples:

• Verbal abuse : insults, name-calling, swearing
• Physical violence : hitting, punching, kicking, choking, biting, burning, shoving, shaking, slapping, scratching, hair-pulling, breaking an object, throwing an object at another, violence with weapons, etc.
• Psychological violence : devaluing (« you're useless »), humiliation, guilt-tripping, intimidation, control, surveillance, banning, provocation, manipulation, isolating others...
• Administrative and economic violence : controlling access to work, stealing money, controlling expenses, preventing access to the law, confiscating means of payment, preventing access to administrative documents, destroying personal documents, taking revenge by not paying alimony...
• Sexual violence : imposing practices, touching, blackmail, marital rape, lack of consent (free, informed and revocable)
• Cyber-violence : distribution of intimate photos or videos, monitoring, controlling communications, insults and threats on social networks...
• Sequestration, death threats, homicide
